A website is where you conduct your business. Is there another place where your visitors and customers can learn more about you in a less formal setting? Consider starting a blog to complement your main website development enterprise and build additional traffic.

Blogging is online journalism. You see people starting blogs each and every day on a variety of subjects. You can talk about a number of topics and get responses from those who visit and read what you post.

Use your blog as a business tool where clients and potential customers can visit in an informal setting away from where you sell your services or products. Allow them to find out more about your business and more importantly, the person behind the business. A blog for your business is a great way to get people talking about your business.

Getting started is not as hard as you think. Many blogging platforms offer free web hosting. Two good examples are Blogger and WordPress. It’s not that difficult to customise your blog and you can use ready-made templates. Step-by-step instructions are offered and you can get going in no time at all. If setting up a blog seems at all complicated, just contact a virtual assistant to set everything up for you.

As your blog would be an extension of your website, the domain name should be as well. Remember to keep it easy to access for anyone. By knowing your website name, they should be able to find your blog too. You can also create a link to the blog right from your website’s pages and vice versa.

Ideally, you may want to use your blog to draw more traffic to your site. Your current customers should be able to ask pertinent questions and communicate with others. Those who find you through your blog instead of your business website can check out your reputation and quality with other existing customers.

Offer interesting content. Blog posts should be shorter than regular articles and make it fairly easy for readers to educate themselves. Create posts that will engage the reader. For example, if you are into gardening, give tips for growing different types of plants or how to fertilise a garden, for example.

You can even give them a teaser so to speak. Entice them to learn more by visiting the link included in the post, which points to a page on your website. Remember to keep the voice of your blog relaxed and inviting in order to keep past readers coming back and new ones interested in learning more.

Above all, interact with your readers, and if it seems too much for you to handle on a daily basis, take on a professional virtual assistant to keep things ticking over. When they comment, answer back. This shows that you are not just there to promote your website or to sell them something. In fact, try your hardest not to sell them anything at all – at least at first. Instead, give them helpful information, interact with them and then post links to your main site as well as other sites. Let them find their way to your site based on your new-found relationship.
