* Stanwell Park, which is near Sydney and its Royal National Park, is a scenic village along the Illawarra coast. You can find many hang gliding establishments in the area, which generally offer basic lessons before actual flight. You will usually take off from Bald Hill, soar over the breathtaking Illawarra escarpment, and land on the magnificent beach. And if hanging in air is not your thing, you can go hanging on rocks via rock climbing!
* Rio de Janeiro, the Marvelous City, also offers marvelous opportunities to fly like a bird and feel free like a bird. You can go tandem hang gliding if you are not confident about having a go at it alone, with appropriate lessons beforehand of course. During the flight, you will be entertained and enthralled with Rio’s airborne sights - Sugar Loaf, Guanabara Bay, Lagoa, Ipanema, Corcovado, and Copacabana, with a smooth landing at the Sao Conrado beach. And the best thing is that you can photograph what you see via special built-in cameras!
* In the United Kingdom, you can find many hang gliding clubs and schools. After all, this is the country that supposedly invented modern hang gliding as a way to fly over the English Channel noiselessly. You will be treated to the beauty of the English countryside, which is best appreciated through the air anyway. Again, you can go on tandem flights. Even the Queen would be envious!
When to Go
Usually, the best time to go hang gliding is in sunny weather, either spring or summer. Your gliding instructor is best equipped to determine good gliding conditions like the presence of well-formed cumulus clouds with darker, flat bases, which suggest light winds and active thermals. All you need to do are do not eat too much before a flight, strap yourself to the glider, set aside your business card holder, and just enjoy the Superman experience.
